The Rainbows, the youngest members of the Girl Guide movement, started in St John’s parish in March 1991. This year we have a full unit of 15 girls aged 5 to 7 years and also a list of girls waiting to join.
Girls largely attend St John’s Academy and Our Lady’s PS but we welcome girls from non Catholic backgrounds and Catholics who attend other schools in Perth.
Rainbows is all about developing self-confidence, building friendships, learning new things, having fun, exploring the world beyond themselves in a safe and nurturing environment. Girls get their hands dirty with arts and crafts, trying out cooking and playing games.
Central to everything is developing an understanding of the Rainbow Promise to do their best to develop their beliefs and be kind and helpful.
Rainbows learn this by doing.
We have also joined up with the Brownies to take part in a sponsored walk to raise money to enable some children in Africa to have lunch while they are at school.
This year we have benefited from the help of two girls from St John’s Academy participating in the Caritas Award scheme. Both girls have been a credit to themselves and their school supporting the leaders and organising whole meetings themselves.
We are also grateful for parental support when we were short of leaders – without it we would not have been able to have a full unit.
